When writing a CV or application form, it is easy to hit a writer’s block on finding new ways to say “I did this… then I did this… my duties were…”, and of course you are not selling yourself by using flat lists. What you need are dynamic, positive words that prompt you to describe your achievements in a job and celebrate your initiative. Easier said than done? Try this cheat-sheet to find inspiration…

Notice a relation to key skills? The words lead you to analyse your work history and experiences for evidence of your abilities – that is what employers are looking for from your job application. I find it useful having a list like this in front of me when writing to get me thinking along these lines (and because there is something energising just reading these possibilities).

Five things to do before The Guardian London Graduate Fair June 10, 2009

- Check out what is going on. The fair runs over two days, 16th-17th June, and there’s more than just employer stands. There are talks from our careers advisers on the job market in various sectors (very useful at the moment), plenty of exhibitor presentations, as well as careers workshops. Check out the presentations programme so you can plan your visit to fit.
- Prepare yourself for some networking. Many people find networking intimidating, but the fair is all about making a connection with an employer and finding out more. Here are some examples of questions to ask well as links to further resources.
- Get your CV checked at your university careers service in advance of the fair. It is worth bringing a number of copies of your CV for employers who ask for them. These CVs should be the real deal – spell-checked, polished, and printed on good quality paper. You can get a CV check at the fair, but the queue does get very long (over 30 mins) and you don’t want to waste time standing around. It’s much easier to get it done beforehand!
- Research. You can see who is exhibiting at the fair here and who they are looking for. Do some research on the companies you are interested in beforehand so you can impress the employers with informed questions.
- Plan to get there early and get to the front of the queue so you can get the attention of employers first. It is easier to make an impression at the beginning, and the employers will still be ‘fresh’ – by the end of the day everyone gets tired from talking to so many people in a busy environment. Pre-register and you can get in an hour before everyone else.

Networking is one of those things that some people do naturally, staying in touch with wide circles of contacts and friends, but others resist it, feeling they should have to use personal favours to get work. But networking isn’t the same as nepotism, it’s about relationships you generate, and it can be an essential way to discover if a career or a particular workplace is right for you before seeking that job. It is also particularly important in a recession jobs market, as you may hear about jobs before they are advertised, you have insiders to ask for interview tips, and you can convince recruiters that you understand and will fit in with that workplace culture.
Here are some top tips from a recent course run at The Careers Group.
- Building relationships This is definitely the key point to remember. Networking objectives don’t have to be big, you shouldn’t be looking to every person you meet to give you a job, or buy into your product. This is what intimidates a lot of people about networking. Instead you should be starting small, making friends, learning what to expect. Find out their objectives see if there is any way you can help them – chat about an innovative new website, introduce them to a useful contact of yours. Or you might ask them about their background, how they got to where they are now. Your initial objectives should be along the lines of gathering information, current awareness, feeling out opinions, finding people who share your outlook. You will find some of these relationships suit you better than others, and you can then build on these.
- Preparation This can really pay off. Before a networking opportunity, think about the people you might meet. Do a quick Google search for some background information on them, or likely buzz topics of conversation. What is your main objective? Think about some open questions you might ask. Is there anything you need to take with you?
- Remembering names The personal touch makes a difference, but when you are meeting a bunch of new people, how are you going to remember them all? Depends how your memory works. Some people like to repeat a name back to someone when they are introduced, personally I need to write the name down later with a quick note of something to remember them by. If you get a business card, write it on the back of that.
- Starting conversations Some people like to get straight to the point, but not everyone appreciates it, and if you start out by asking for a job and there isn’t one, that’s a conversation stopper. Finding some common ground is a great way to start – chat about the buffet, the biscuits, or a recent news story in that sector. Yes it might seem like boring small-talk at first, but it should feed casual and relaxed, and if you can find a common passion or point of view, you have instantly become memorable, even if there is nothing you can do for each other yet.
- Phone, email, Twitter, letter, fax…?! Everyone has a different preference, and it is important to consider that when making contact. Emails are easier to ignore, but may be a more polite and considered way of introducing yourself. Phone calls can be more effective at getting results, but can feel coercive. Letters are less common these days, so may make a special impact if you can give them a personal touch e.g. an unexpected thank you card. Try different methods and see what a person responds to best. How you say it is just as important as what you say.

Choosing a legal career: job interviews – say as little as possible?? March 19, 2009

Continuing the legal theme this week, I thought I’d discuss an interview tip given in a new book we have acquired. In “The Legal Job Interview”, Clifford Ennico gives valuable advice on every stage of the interview process from initial body language to negotiating salary, and the perspective on legal culture makes it
particularly useful over general interview books. However his top tip, his “key rule”, stood out to me as somewhat controversial and needing a little more examination.
SAY AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE
He calls this the 20/80 rule. In any successful interview he reckons he will do 20 percent of the talking, and the interviewer does 80 percent. Why?
- the less you say, the less likely you are to say anything risky, anything that contradicts their beliefs. You should be like a politician, even if you all agree on everything but one point, that one negative is what will stick in their minds. They are probably interviewing a lot of candidates for each position, so they might only remember a couple of key things about each candidate.
- lawyers like to play things safe. They want to pick the safe candidate who is keen to do things their way. If you assert your own opinion too strongly you might signal to them that you are not a team player, that you are more interested in doing things your way.
- they want someone calm and collected who will reassure clients with clear, concise answers. You need to be the lawyer they are looking for.
Of course, the key to success with this approach is asking the right questions.
Rather than demonstrating the qualities they are looking for in your answers, instead you demonstrate them in your questions:
- show intelligence and insight in your questions. If one of their specialisms is in an area that is economically doing particularly well or badly, ask how that affects the future of that area – which specialisms are growth areas?
- demonstrate your qualities as a good listener who values the opinions of others.
- demonstrate the skill of active listening, skilfully asking further questions to get beneath the surface and extract more information.
- show them your enthusiasm and ambition – ask what they think is key to being successful in that position (you will also learn if the culture values working hard and long hours, or is more about politics – getting on well with the right people)
- flatter the interviewer by showing interest in what they do and being keen to learn from them and soak up their views.
It is an interesting approach – it sounds a little too evasive at first, until you realise the importance of the questions you are asking. While I wouldn’t worry trying to achieve the magical 20/80 ratio, the main point to take away is how important it is to ask good questions. Some of the qualities listed above are difficult to demonstrate in any other way, it is a key way of showing your interest in the firm, and they will at least expect one question from you at the end to round off the interview. It is worthwhile preparing a few, so even if they answer some prior to the interview you still have something to ask.
No matter how detailed the recruitment brochure and website has been, no matter how clearly the presentations have explained everything about the firm, it is essential ask them questions!
